Adages, the oral transfer of knowledge between generations

Here you will find a list of over seven hundred adages people use everyday to improve their lives. An adage is a short saying that transmits wisdom. Before people knew how to read and write, they passed knowledge by word of mouth. The word adage comes from Latin adagium (saying), formed by the prefix ad- (to, toward, about) and agium (from the verb agio, I say). ;

  15. Lion's share (A contract that offers all the benefits to one party and no benefits to the other party. It comes from a fable told by the Greek philosopher Aesop (620-650 b.C.), where a lion, a fox and a donkey collaborated on a hunting expedition. The fox made the plan. The donkey stump his feet and scared off the pray, and the lion caught the animals on the other side. After the capturing the animals, the lion asked the fox to divide the loot into three equal parts. Once the captured animals were divided into three parts, the lion jump and killed the donkey. Then he said to the fox: "The first part is for me, because I am the king of the jungle. The second part is for me, because I am your partner. You better leave me the third part, if you don't want to happen to you, the same thing that happed to the donkey.")
